Smart Routing: How to Skip the Line at DFW, ATL, and LAX

GateReady's Smart Routing feature analyzes real-time checkpoint data to recommend the fastest security line. Here is how it works at three of the busiest airports.

At airports with multiple security checkpoints, choosing the right one can save you 20-30 minutes. GateReady's Smart Routing feature, available to Fast Pass subscribers, analyzes real-time wait time data across all checkpoints and recommends the fastest option — even if it means entering through a different checkpoint than the one closest to your gate.

How Smart Routing Works

The algorithm considers three factors:

  1. Current wait time at each checkpoint (pulled from official airport sensors and our data network)
  2. Walking time between checkpoints and your gate via airside connections (trains, walkways, buses)
  3. Anti-herd logic to prevent sending everyone to the same "fast" checkpoint, which would create a new bottleneck

The result: a recommendation that minimizes your total time from curb to gate, not just your time in the security line.

DFW: Five Terminals, Many Options

Dallas/Fort Worth is one of the best airports for Smart Routing because its five terminals are connected airside via the Skylink train. This means you can enter security at Terminal A (which might have a 10-minute wait) even if your flight departs from Terminal D (which might have a 40-minute wait).

How it works at DFW:

  • Each terminal (A through E) has its own security checkpoints.
  • After clearing security at any terminal, ride the Skylink train to your departure terminal in 5-10 minutes.
  • GateReady monitors all DFW checkpoints and factors in Skylink transit time.

Important: Smart Routing is carry-on only. If you check a bag, it goes to your ticketed terminal and you should screen there. Check DFW live.

ATL: Five Checkpoints, One Winner

Atlanta has five domestic security checkpoints (Main, North, South, Lower North) plus an international checkpoint. They all lead to the same airside concourse system connected by the underground train.

How it works at ATL:

  • All domestic checkpoints connect to Concourses T through D.
  • The South checkpoint often has 30-50% shorter waits than Main, but it requires walking to the south end of the terminal.
  • GateReady calculates whether the walk to a faster checkpoint plus the shorter wait beats going to the closest one.

During the government shutdown, some ATL checkpoints have been intermittently closed, making Smart Routing even more valuable. Check ATL live.

LAX: Terminal Hopping via Airside Bus

LAX is more limited for Smart Routing because most terminals are not connected airside. However, there are airside shuttle buses between select terminals:

  • Terminals 4-8 have airside bus connections.
  • Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) connects to select domestic terminals.
  • Terminals 1-3 are generally isolated.

When a connection exists, Smart Routing can recommend entering through a less crowded terminal and taking the bus. Check LAX live.

Getting Started

Smart Routing is available to GateReady Fast Pass members. To use it:

  1. Sign up for Fast Pass or upgrade your existing account.
  2. Navigate to your departure airport and enter your terminal.
  3. If a faster route exists, GateReady shows the recommendation with estimated time savings.

A minimum 10-minute savings is required before a recommendation appears — we will not send you on a detour for marginal gains.
