Summer Travel 2026: Beat the Security Lines

Summer 2026 is projected to break air travel records. Learn which airports get slammed, the best times to fly, and how PreCheck, CLEAR, and smart planning keep you ahead of the crowds.

Summer is the busiest season for US air travel, and 2026 is shaping up to break records. TSA screened over 3 million passengers on peak summer days in 2025, and early booking data suggests 2026 will surpass that. Long security lines are not inevitable, though. With the right strategy, you can avoid the worst of it. Here is what GateReady's data and intelligence network tell us about navigating summer security.

The Summer Rush Airports

Summer traffic is more evenly distributed than spring break, but certain airports consistently hit capacity constraints from Memorial Day through Labor Day:

  • ATL — Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta — The world's busiest airport gets even busier in summer. The main checkpoint routinely exceeds 45 minutes during the 5 AM to 9 AM push. The South checkpoint is consistently faster, sometimes by 15 to 20 minutes.
  • ORD — O'Hare International (Chicago) — Summer thunderstorms compound security stress at O'Hare. When flights delay, passengers stack up at checkpoints waiting for re-screening after gate changes. Terminals 1 and 3 (United and American) are the worst affected.
  • DEN — Denver International — Denver is a major summer connection hub. The bridge walk from the main terminal to Concourse A adds 10 to 15 minutes, and many travelers underestimate this. Security itself runs 20 to 35 minutes during morning peaks.
  • LAX — Los Angeles International — International and domestic traffic collide at LAX in summer. Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) has ongoing construction, and domestic terminals like T4 (American) and T7 (United) see 30 to 50 minute waits.
  • JFK — John F. Kennedy (New York) — JFK handles a massive share of summer transatlantic traffic. Terminal 1 and the new Terminal 6 construction affect passenger flow. Terminal 4 (Delta) runs its own operation and is generally more efficient.
  • MCO — Orlando International — Summer extends Orlando's peak season. Families with young children slow checkpoint throughput, and the morning push between 7 AM and 10 AM is the worst window.
  • SFO — San Francisco International — Tech workers returning from summer travel create Sunday evening surges. Terminal 2 (Delta, United domestic) has the most efficient layout, while Terminal 1 (Southwest) gets backed up.
  • SEA — Seattle-Tacoma — Alaska cruises drive heavy summer traffic through SEA. The central checkpoint handles most passengers, and waits can exceed 40 minutes during peak morning departures.

Best Times to Fly in Summer

Not all summer days and times are created equal. GateReady's historical data reveals clear patterns:

  • Best days to fly: Tuesday and Wednesday. These days see 20 to 30 percent less checkpoint volume than Friday, Sunday, or Monday.
  • Best time of day: Early afternoon flights departing between 1 PM and 3 PM typically have the shortest security waits. The morning rush clears by 10 AM, and the evening wave has not yet started.
  • Worst days: The Friday before Memorial Day weekend, the Friday before July 4th, and the Sunday after Labor Day are the three highest-volume days of the entire summer.
  • Worst time of day: 5 AM to 8 AM at hub airports. Early birds stack up because most domestic flights cluster in the 6 AM to 9 AM departure window.

PreCheck and CLEAR: Your Summer Advantage

Trusted traveler programs deliver their biggest ROI during summer. Here is why:

TSA PreCheck ($78 for 5 years) gives you access to dedicated lanes where you keep shoes, belt, and jacket on, and laptops stay in your bag. During summer peaks, the PreCheck lane at a busy airport might be 5 to 10 minutes while the standard lane is 40 to 60 minutes. That is not a small difference — it is the difference between making your flight and missing it.

CLEAR ($189/year) lets you skip the ID verification line entirely using biometrics. When paired with PreCheck, you go from curb to gate in under 10 minutes at most airports, even during summer peaks. CLEAR operates at 50+ airports including all the summer hotspots listed above.

Many premium travel credit cards reimburse one or both programs. Check your card's travel perks — you may already be eligible for a free enrollment. Read our full comparison of PreCheck vs CLEAR vs Global Entry if you are deciding which to get.

Family Travel Tips for Summer

Summer means families, and families mean strollers, car seats, snack bags, and the general chaos of traveling with children. Here is how to manage security with kids:

  • Children under 12 do not need to remove shoes and can go through the body scanner with a parent. Children 13 and older follow adult screening rules.
  • Strollers and car seats must go through the X-ray machine. Gate-check your stroller if possible — it means less to manage at the checkpoint and you get it back at the jet bridge.
  • Formula, breast milk, and juice for infants are exempt from the 3.4 oz liquid rule but must be declared to the officer and may be tested. Keep these items in an easily accessible outer pocket.
  • Pack each child a clear bag with their electronics and a snack. It teaches them the routine and reduces the scramble at the conveyor belt.
  • Assign a "checkpoint captain" — one adult handles bins and bags, the other handles kids through the scanner. Splitting roles cuts your checkpoint time significantly.

The Smart Summer Traveler's Checklist

  1. Enroll in PreCheck or Global Entry now. Enrollment centers book up in summer. Apply at least 3 weeks before your trip.
  2. Set up your trip in GateReady. Add your flights in the trip dashboard and we will monitor conditions and send you a "leave now" alert at the optimal time.
  3. Check live conditions before departing. GateReady's airport directory shows real-time wait times for every terminal at 50 airports, updated every 15 minutes.
  4. Fly Tuesday or Wednesday when possible. Flexible scheduling is the easiest way to avoid crowds.
  5. Target early afternoon departures. The 1 PM to 3 PM window has the best checkpoint conditions at most airports.
  6. Add 30 minutes to your normal buffer on peak days. Friday before a holiday weekend? Give yourself extra room.

Stay Ahead of the Crowds

Summer travel does not have to mean summer stress. The travelers who have the smoothest experiences are the ones who check conditions before they leave, not the ones who show up and hope for the best. Sign up for GateReady and let us watch the checkpoints so you can focus on enjoying your summer.
